Camp Korey Magic:  Allen's Story

I suspect my Camp Korey volunteer experience was not unusual - namely - it changed my life.  To see the camper's transition from fear and insecurity at arrival, to tears and hugs at having to leave friends at departure, proves something special happens in the course of their time at camp.  It was a privilege to be a small part of the Camp Korey staff team.  A team totally focused on doing whatever it takes to support kids with significant challenges enjoy just being kids.  From cooks, to counselors, to wranglers, to nurses, to hot-air balloon operators, to spa-service providers, to animal therapy specialists, to the most senior camp adminis
trators, everyone pitches in to make a camper's time at Camp Korey the best time of their young lives.

So what was so special about my time at Camp Korey?  Well, it was the whispered request from a camper asking me if I would play catch with him.  It was being in the presence of terrific kids that for the first time in a long time were able to just be themselves around peers.  It was watching every camper being given the opportunity to experience joy.  It was watching kids who had difficulty walking on arrival, dance the night before departure.  It was watching a physically challenged kid recite Shakespeare.  It was the uncertainty on the faces of parents during check-in compared to their faces at pick-up hearing from their child how much fun they had.  It was the opportunity to interact with such dedicated camp staff giving of themselves in the service to others.

The night before our session ended, I got pretty choked up watching the kids perform at "stage night."  I thought to myself, I must have lucked out and been present with an unusual group of kids.  I turned to my lead who was present at each session and asked, "each week must have a different chemistry, right?  This magic doesn't happen every week does it?"  She smiled and with a slight tilt of her head and said, "yeah ... it kinda does."

So, there you have it.  After one session the kids and Camp Korey staff succeeded in capturing my heart.  Camp Korey is a magical place that provides wonderful experiences for special kids.  What a privilege and joy to have been a part of it all for a week last August.

Become Part of the Magic at Camp Korey...

Camp Korey utilizes the talents and support of hundreds of volunteers to accomplish its mission to honor the courage, strength, and determination of children and their families who battle life-threatening and serious illnesses; and to provide them with a safe, friendly, medically sound environment in which to simply have fun and be kids.

Ways to Get Involved

Volunteering with Camper Programs means direct participation with our campers during weeklong summer sessions, year-round programs, special camper events, and more.  It means being at the heart of providing therapeutic recreation services (fun!), but it is also a significant commitment of time and training.  Our top priority is always the safety and well-being of our campers, so there is paperwork and a background check required of all Camper Programs volunteers.

Ready to jump in?  Here are important things to know:

  1. Roles - Camper Programs Volunteers may act as cabin counselors, program volunteers (ropes course, equestrian program, music), Dream Team (kitchen) staff, medical volunteers, lifeguards, or support staff.

  2. Deadlines - Paid Summer Staff Applications are due on April 15th of each year.  Application deadlines for Volunteer Summer Staff are typically rolling, but the necessary medical paperwork is required of all summer staff by June 25.

  3. Commitments - Residential Volunteers (that includes paid and volunteer staff) make a full week’s commitment.  This helps give our campers the best experience possible, as they spend their full week getting comfortable with their counselors and having a wonderful, safe adventure.  Day-Only (Dream Team) and Medical Volunteers typically work in shifts.

  4. Training - Required training depends upon the various Camper Programs positions.  You will receive information training and medical requirements upon accepted application.

  5. Forms/Applications - Fill out the form below according to your position (New or Returning, Residential or Day-Only).  Email or fax all forms to Laura Gehmen, Residential Life Coordinator, at lgehmen@campkorey.org or 425-844-3228.

There are as many ways to connect and contribute to Camp Korey as there are generous volunteers!  We appreciate your time and unique talents, and we are excited to find the right place for you within our family.  You can volunteer for a one-day event, a weekend, an ongoing project, or anytime!  Volunteer on your own or as part of a group--there are countless ways to feel great as you support the Camp Korey mission.

Ready to jump in?  Here are important things to know:

  1. Events - Camp Korey hosts various events throughout the year, including fundraisers like Washington Wines Festival’s Wine Weekend (July 9-11. 2010), Grow (September 25), the Fall Festival (October 1-31), and Prescription Laughter Luncheons (spring).  These events help us generate the funds to provide therapeutic recreation free of charge to camper families, and you make them possible!  Event Volunteer roles include guest registration, setup and cleanup, food service, and more.

  2. Facilities Projects - With over 800 acres of land at Carnation Farm, we always welcome volunteers to help with maintenance and property improvements!  There are a variety of projects that are great for corporate, church, or school groups, and they are easy to arrange.  Activities include building repairs, gardening, painting, weeding, and more.

  3. Administrative Support - Camp Korey appreciates both ongoing and on-call volunteers to assist with large mailings, packet stuffing, data entry, and various office projects. This opportunity is great for public service hours, or volunteers looking for a role that is not physically strenuous.

  4. Community Service Groups - Camp Korey is extremely grateful to local companies and community groups who choose to come to Camp Korey for a group work day or even a whole week.  We can always find a project for you, and help you determine the best setup for your group.
