What does belonging mean to you?
As 2024 comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of belonging. At Camp Korey, belonging means our kids are not defined by their medical diagnoses but empowered to be their authentic selves, celebrated for their individuality. Programs are often organized by medical condition groups, creating the opportunity for campers to connect with peers who understand and relate to their experiences, reminding them that they are not alone.
Your support creates a safe space where kids who have life-altering medical conditions can discover who they are, build friendships, and experience genuine belonging. This commitment is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring all activities are adaptable to meet the unique needs of our campers and are provided completely free of charge.
Meet Scarlett. Her journey with Camp Korey began at the age of six. Over her eleven years of camp, she has embarked on countless adventures, forged lasting friendships, and created cherished memories at what has become her second home. These experiences woven together with the magic of shared camp traditions fostered a sense of belonging for Scarlett at Camp Korey.
Belonging that made her feel safe and confident enough to try new things and explore her boldest, truest, self. Embraced by a community that celebrated her, she discovered her passion for the stage and the joy of sharing her poetry and comedy.
One of her favorite traditions, “The Book of Firsts,” perfectly encapsulates this journey.
“It’s not just about the firsts you’ve done, but all the firsts everyone else has done, and you can share in the experience of trying new things together, which is vulnerable for many people, and that connection is what brings us closer… – Camper Alum Scarlett
Shared experiences at Camp Korey help kids, including Scarlett, build confidence to express their own selves and find strength in each other’s differences. These meaningful opportunities equipped and empowered Scarlett with the courage and skills to become a future leader and role model in her community. As she ages out of programs and concludes her time as a camper, she looks forward to passing on the magic that has shaped her life to others by becoming a camp counselor.
