A little bit about Camp Korey...
Not all children have the comfort of being able to chart the clear path of their future, especially those facing countless medical treatments for chronic illnesses. Camp Korey is a very special spot where medically challenged kids can safely forget about the limitations of their ailments. Every child, no matter their illness or capacity, can fully participate in each activity, because of the subtle, yet liberating, access components built right into the camp facilities.
Camp Korey is named to remember 18-year-old Korey Rose, whose active life was cut short in 2004 by osteo sarcoma, a bone cancer. The camp will provide a needed respite from the ongoing medical visits and other worries that accompany childhood illnesses and will instead give children a significant dose of hope and fun. Camp Korey will offer campers a chance to normalize their lives with other children and young adults battling the same illness. Together they’ll share outdoor activities, swimming, boating, horseback riding, arts, crafts, and more.
An entire medical team will be on site with the campers. Best of all, campers will stay without cost, as the camp will be funded entirely by charitable donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Camp Korey is set to open in the summer of 2008 and will serve children and families throughout the Pacific Northwest. The camp is a proposed affiliate of the “Hole in the Wall Camps,” founded by actor Paul Newman in 1988. Ten such camps exist worldwide, serving nearly 10,000 kids a year.
Camp Korey aspires to be a member of the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps. We are following a set of guidelines that we hope will lead to provisional membership and then full membership upon the opening of our camp. These requirements are designed to assure that each member camp provides the highest level of safety and programming for the children. They are also designed to assure that each member camp has sound financial support. At this time the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps is assisting Camp Korey to meet the necessary requirements. Being a part of such a well-established and acclaimed network of camps will provide Camp Korey with the experience, knowledge, and support to operate at the highest level of excellence.
